Colleges need to put some effort into preparation of their students for internship. I say this because many of the students who join various organizations as interns tend to be rather ill-prepared. They are unable to cope with the demands that come with being in a serious workplace. They are also unable to take advantage of the opportunities that come with an internship. They turn out to be poor envoys of their colleges.
Colleges therefore need to get their students to understand the whole concept of internship, before the students go out in search of internship opportunities. Some of the students who go to various organizations for internships turn out to be people who simply have no idea what internship is all about. They are therefore unable to take full advantage of the opportunity. Their expectations are not aligned with the reality about internships. The organizations that give them internship opportunities end up being disappointed with them. The students, in turn, end up being disappointed with the internships… it is often a rather sad state of affairs.
Colleges also need to get their students to understand how they can integrate well into the organizations they will be undertaking their internships at. They have to be taught how to deal with the colleagues they will be encountering at the organizations where they are to serve as interns. They have to be taught how to cope with the demands (including deadline pressures and stress from bosses) that come with being in a serious workplace environment — which is very different from the relaxed college setup.
At yet another level, colleges need to get their students to understand how to go about looking for internship opportunities. Some of the students tend to be rather naïve when it comes to these things. Some are simply unable to get any internship opportunities. And it is a real pity when a person goes through a four year college course without ever getting an internship opportunity. It is important to get the students to be reasonably aggressive in their search for internship opportunities. The students also need to be taught where to go, when searching for internship opportunities. That would include HR offices, recruitment agency offices, HR portals such as myhr.cvs.com, among others. Teaching students how to search for internship opportunities would have another benefit. It would also give them skills that would be helpful when it comes to searching for actual job opportunities, once they complete their studies.
